BIO
ZackieL is a multidisciplinary artist of an era of innovations of consciousness and evolutions in art and culture.
Visionary singer/songwriter, player of guitar, percussions and handpan, ethnomusicologist & field recordist, event organiser & MC, spoken word poet & storywriter, world traveller.
The music can be described as GlobalSoul, or solfolkloric, informed by folk, jazz, funk, roots, hip-hop, blues and medicine music.
Of French and English origins, now living in Southern France where he was born before moving to London as a child. Facilitating events and performing between France, London & Bristol, and in many places across the Earth on travels.
He has six years of experiences regularly hosting and headlining myriad forms of events. Be them open mics and jams, immersive performances and innovative, interactive concerts, from uncountable firesides to festival stages with audiences of hundreds, as far and wide as Australia, India, Nepal, Thailand, Columbia, Peru, Guatemala, Portugal as well as at home. It's been his principle craft and work for stretches of many months at a time, organising, hosting and performing at several events a week during travels and long summers.
Keeping a fire is a skill and an intuition he's had since he was a child. So is bringing everyone together, never leaving anyone behind, creating and guiding spaces that kindly, honouringly and warmly include, empower and harmonise others.
ZackieL studied a BA in Ethnomusicology and Global Popular Music course at The School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, though had been set to study Psycho-Social Studies at Goldsmiths. The core focuses of study included trends in the use of music in ceremonial and religious contexts for healing, communal and ancestral connection, rites of passage, etc. He wrote 1st class papers and created podcasts on music as a core source of individual and collective empowerment and transformation, with contexts including West and South Africa, and Cuba. Others were on the nature of music used for healing trance rituals in places such as Morocco and Indonesia.
Recently he went to Peruvian Amazon as parts of a work contract as a field recordist for Universal Pictures. He spent many weeks living alone with a family of internationally-heralded Shipibo-Conibo traditional healers, recording and learning the practices of Icaros, which can be described as medicine songs performed in ayahuasca ceremonies. One of these recordings has been licensed and used at the opening of the recent award-winning film Tàr featuring Cate Blanchett.
He is a long-time core member of the Village101 Community Interest Company: arts collective, innovatory arts production house and community hub for social regeneration, alongside visionary artist and close friend Muti Musafiri.
