The Exhibition is a presentation of images, videos and namely recordings gathered during ZackieL’s visit to Sanken Nete near Pucallpa in Peru, the home and retreat centre of the Vargas family of Shipibo-Conibo heritage. ZackieL stayed with them for almost  two months, originally to record a piece which is featured during the opening credits of the  Universal Pictures film Tàr, and then to deeply encounter the medicine and bond with the family.

The recordings are of Icaros, performances of medicine songcrafting, sung in ceremony. They are profoundly moving pieces devoted to, in Mama Elisa Vargas’s  words, ‘processing and healing the grief of our world in our times, as we’ve lived through covid, wars and suffering of so many people around the world’. More About ZackieL

Some artists are keepers of culture, they uphold and strengthen it. Their innovations bring contemporary relevance more so than transformation.

Other kinds are bridges between cultures, they regenerate and re-design the bonds and currents between eras, practices and visions of life. Inter-dimensionality, multidisciplinarity, radical consciousness. This is what they bring to offer when folks gather at the table of diversity.Their works are for the creation of new ways of life, passages of liberated thought and expressions to communicate to the collective.

ZackieL practices such artistry.

Born in rural Southern France, coming to London as a 6 year old, raised and nurtured by uncountable cultures, ZackieL’s life has been many passages of home created amidst diversity. 6 years have been lived seeking, journeying, event organising and performing worldwide on every continent save Africa – soon come.

The music is sourced in apprenticeships and collaborations with master musicians including several distinguished West African griots, North Indian virtuosos, American, French and Thai Jazz bandleaders, Indonesian Gamelan conductors, Shipibo-Conibo Master Healers, Ghanaian, Senegalese and Afro-Cuban maestro percussionists, and a South African folkloric soul singer of Xhosa heritage, to name a few. His works are part informed by the Ethnomusicology/Global Popular Music degree at SOAS University of London.

Alongside the singing, spoken word poetry, composing and songwriting, ZackieL plays guitar, handpan and percussions, and contributes mbira, kora, flutes, keys and bass to his works. He is a co-founder of the Ubuntu Village Decolonial Healing and Humanity Space currently in partnership and residency with &Soul.
